My MSBNC Clip re: Judge Sotomayor

May 27, 2009

A few points of clarification:

I just don’t understand why Chris Wilson went with the “intellectual heft” argument.  It’s the least substantive argument against Sotomayor, (and as such, the easiest to knock down) and unlike criticism of her legal opinion, it sounds personal.  I never suggested that Republicans would vote against her because of her race, only that this nominee puts them on a political tightrope, as their arguments against Judge Sotomayor can be easily (mis?)interpreted as arguments against a pivotal moment for the Hispanic community.  I think most Republicans understand how delicately they will need to proceed, even if Wilson refused to acknowledge that reality. Last but not least, all credit to AEW for the Puerto Rican/Summa sentiment!

I would hope that a wise White man with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a Latina female who hasn’t lived that life.

See THAT is where I would have gone if I were him. I know commenting on other people’s blogs takes up a lot of your time, but maybe you should write your own blog and become a talking head.

You were great in this. I loved that “it’s a joke” line. It really is a joke.

I oppose Sonia Sotomayor appointment to the Supreme Court. Sonia Sotomayor does not fit the three essential and most basic criteria to sit in the Supreme Court and make judicial decisions. The three criteria are: know the facts of the case; know the law pertaining to the facts of the case and apply the law pertaining to the facts of the case, when making a judicial decision. She has demonstrated time and again that she will legislate from the bench. It is the Executive and Legislative Branches to make law not a Supreme Court Justice. She has no right to usurp this exclusive right of these two branches of government. It is not relevant to the decision that she has a ‘compelling story.’ The realms of these two discourses are dichotomous. The Democratic Party’s decision (Obama and Congress) to nominate and support her appointment is simply in my opinion a political decision to further cultivate the Latino vote. This in my opinion is an abrogation of Obama’s and the Democratic Congress responsibility and dereliction of their duty to this country. Further, the Supreme Court does not need Justices prejudicial against any race. In her case, her prejudice towards white males as expressed in her most notorious comment, is obvious and is unacceptable. If a white male had made this comment, he would be castigated through out the world as a despicable racist. I expect both the Executive and Legislative Branches to begin paying attention to black on white racism and in this case brown on white racism because if white on black racism is unacceptable, then so must be the other two. Our elected officials must not make a political decision. The decision cannot be what is good for latinos. The decision cannot be what is pay back for the ‘Latino vote getting Obama elected’. The decision must be what is good for the decision making process in a Supreme Court decision. Nothing I say is a matter of a ‘smear’ campaign. You just can’t refrain from painting labels on someone’s argumant. Start refuting their argument with facts.

It has been two days now. Are you going to post my comment regarding Sonia Sotomayor’s appointment to the Supreme Court? Or are you to afraid about what I wrote and how it might influence your ignorant and white folk hating readers?

Also Mike, since I’m half-Caucasian does this mean I’m half-self hating? And, does that mean my readers hate ME?! Oh the irony!

As usual Ms. Menendez you give a very professional and thoughtful interview.

I think you are right that Republicans have a latino and hispanic problem. Those groups are increasingly essnetial to elections and a party that does not speak to them will not get elected for quite some time.

As for Judge Sotomayor … she seems highly intelligent and plenty qualified to me. I can’t see opposing her nomination for any good reason. Seems like the only reason would be political ideology. She is unquestionly a good pick for Obama to make.

I can’t quite comprehend the demonization of this woman by the right wing. She is clearly a great choice, and they are clearing oppossing her on partisan grounds alone.
